I always love fun amusing questions. Who doesn’t? Some of my favourites are often related to movies, music, or any other form of entertainment. One that’s come to mind recently is the idea of having your own soundtrack. In particular, the music you’d want for whenever you’re walking. What would you choose, and why?
I feel like it needs to be more specific, though. There’s a lot of factors that would affect what you choose. For instance, the overall mood would always be different depending on where you’re walking, what your intention is, and how you’re feeling. With all these factors that would result in different choices, where do you begin?
That’s a good question. Where do you start with this whole idea? Personally, I think it’s good to start easy and think of music you would want for when you’re in a calm & open mood. What music would fit while you’re walking in a relaxed and approachable headspace? For me, I’d have to go with something gentle and intriguing, like this track from the K-PAX score.
Perfection.
Whenever I’m walking with the purpose of exercising, I want that feeling of liveliness and motion. It’s like I know I have a plan, I want to kick off with a good start, stick to that plan, keep on moving, and even after that, feel like I’m still ready for action. It needs to be a bit bouncy, playful, and slightly mischievous. This opening piece from the score to The Goonies captures all of that perfectly. If you remember how the opening to that film goes, you’ll know why I chose it.
Random Trivia: This was used in some trailers during the 90’s.
And what about when you’re walking out in public with a purpose? For example, when you’re out shopping. I don’t listen to my own music in stores (mainly so I can enjoy the in-store ambiance and activity), but if I were to assign some kind of music to those moments, I would want something charming and fun, yet warm and gentle. I’d go with a track from another film score. This one or anything like it, to be exact.
Can’t go wrong with Danny Elfman’s music.
Then there’s the idea of playing music that would be a big contrast to an environment or scenario. That could be funny, as long as it’s not disrespectful and is only meant to be silly. I mean, it’d be awkward if you walked into a church while Voltaire’s “Death Death Devil Devil Evil Evil” plays. Nah, I’d wanna go for something unexpected, silly, catchy, and energetic as I enter a chill quiet place like a library or waiting room.
Oh yeah this is my jam!
And how about when you enter your own home? Maybe a theme to your favourite sitcom or something that has that sort of family feeling? You could choose something like the theme to Family Matters. That’d be fun! Or what if you have a smaller, more quiet sort of home-life? What music do you choose then? Maybe the theme to Scrubs would work for that. Or even the theme to The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Tripping over an ottoman would be entirely optional.
Of course, with all these numerous choices and questions, it might seem overwhelming and you may as well just write a lengthy list of music for all sorts of moments, not just for when you walk somewhere. And in the end, maybe you shouldn’t overthink it. Maybe you should just choose an all-time favourite song for all sorts of scenarios. Or if you want to make someone laugh, choose something unexpected enough to where it stands out and makes people go, “What the hell?”
With that said, it honestly makes me think that something like the Night Court theme should play every time I enter a room. But until that happens, I’ll just stick to humming it.
See you next week! o/
