It certainly has been a minute hasn’t it? First… let’s start with a little music to set the tone.
Second… grab a snack.
Third? Make yourselves comfortable.
Good. And now… the main course.
How It Is, How It Was, How It Could Be
I didn’t wanna let this blog go fully quiet. Not yet, at least. I got plenty more life in me. Yes, videos & film is more visually exciting and will always be the main goal. But words are, have been, and always will be at the core of my means in expressing myself. As long as they are here, I am here too in word form. It’s raw, it’s me at its purest form, and it has led to other things – because I’ve always subscribed to the notion of ideas leading to ideas that lead to other ideas. That too has formed a lot in how I approach things here, and in general.
Time is the main thing, but right now as I write this (and as I try to get one of my overly-affectionate cats under control), something inside is telling me this is the time. Will this eventually go fully quiet? Will it ever stop? It’s possible… maybe even inevitable. But turn off the lights, and I’ll glow. It’s even possible this could transform into “micro blogging” through Bluesky/Spoutible posts, as I do not use Twitter anymore (still not calling it X).
Acting is still a big goal, and filmmaking (screenwriting and directing, in particular) is the main passion, but content creation is also at the top of my mind. I mentioned this to someone recently, but I see content creation as a “sister medium/industry” adjacent to filmmaking. That obviously depends on the type of video content and execution. But in terms of an overall process, I feel that this is still largely true. And some creators, such as Natalie Lynn, undoubtedly have a very cinematic look and feel to their videos. Whether some creators embrace that power of having movie-like visuals to their aesthetic and/or editing style is, of course, up to them. But it’s there, and seeing it makes me realize it is a sign to take my sensibilities further.
“Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends and your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you’re a director. Everything after that, you’re just negotiating your budget and your fee.” – James Cameron, Director of Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, Titanic, and more.
Many Youtubers and content creators have started like this. Even some of the famous ones such as those who focus solely on vlogs (Jenn McAllister comes to mind) have made a short film for fun or as an early “experimental video” before they found their niche. Maybe they pursue it once more, either as their own work or acting in another friend/collaborator’s short film, but either way it still counts even if it amounts to what they look at as a short phase.
When I mentally take a step back to think about all this, it makes me feel like that’s the phase I’m shifting to right now. It will change and evolve, but so will my sensibilities. And considering all the ideas I’ve developed over the years, it makes sense to jump in right now.
Doing My Thing
I had a lot of fun practicing film-like ideas and techniques on Tiktok, but with the current questions regarding Tiktok’s future, that feels like another sign that I should develop those more fleshed-out concepts through Youtube. I’m even thinking of ways I could implement those ideas into Twitch streams, but that’s all theory until I actually play around with it.
And, of course, there’s this. As I’ve said, I still have plenty of life in me to do more written stuff. I’ve even contemplated moving to another platform for blogging; but there is a good amount of people here who seem to enjoy what I’m doing, so I should really just continue my thing here. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Ya know?
In terms of when blog posts will go up, I’m still thinking I should stick to Fridays. That’s always felt like a day that just works for me, so I’ll continue it as best as I can even if it’s every other Friday for somewhat bigger entries. It’s also not a bad idea to go bi-weekly. That way I could focus less on quantity and more on quality. More time does allow me to better refine and edit something. So hey, let’s give it a shot shall we?
There’s plenty of ways I can change up my neck of the woods here, and that’s sure to bring other challenges. But the fun in doing so is in just that, so the only way to see how it’ll play out is to do it to it. This almost feels derivative, even similar to past entries, but sometimes we need the familiar. Sometimes, we need a recap. Sometimes, familiarity helps before we officially launch into new territory.
So saddle up and stick around, this year is about new things, changes, and challenges. And it’s time to explore them all.
Stick around and I’ll see you soon!
